7/8 October 1940: The London Underground on this day 75 years ago
Thirty-first day/night of the London Blitz.
On Monday 7th October 1940, Green Gate sub-station near West Ham District line station was slightly damaged by a High Explosive (HE) bomb.[1]
At 08:50 on the 8th, an HE penetrated the roof of Charing Cross (now Embankment) station, and exploded on the District line track, although there was no damage to the river wall or an adjacent water main. The ticket hall was wrecked, killing one person - 30 year-old Wilfred Samuel Uffindell of Seven Kings, Essex - and injuring nineteen more. Station closed.[1][2][3][4]

1. Wood Lane 05/10 - interference with stabling trains, working of Central line, and operation of sub-station.
2. Neasden Depot 24/09 - prevents use of south end of yard.
3. Neasden Depot 30/09 - no interference.[6]
