1/2 October 1940: The London Underground on this day 75 years ago

Twenty-fifth day/night of the London Blitz.

At 18:30 on the Tuesday 1 October 1940, services resumed between Woodside Park and High Barnet on the Northern line, and at 19:16 between Wood Lane and Ealing on the Central line.[1]

At 20:35 on the Tuesday 1 October 1940, bombs were dropped between Finchley Road and West Hampstead, damaging windows on a Bakerloo line train approaching the latter station, and cutting the current from Finchley Road sub-station.[2] A feeder was opened from Baker Street substation, and services resumed at 21:00.[2] Obstructions on the track at West Hampstead at 21:55 suspended northbound services for 20 minutes.[1]

A bomb hit the machine shop at the Hammersmith car sheds at 21:04, and also damaged a train approaching the station.[2] Hammersmith to Latimer Road services suspended until 21:45.[1]

At 05:10 on the 2nd, a bomb hit the northbound track at Golders Green station on the Northern line, near No. 28 points and the tunnel mouth. Power supply, signals, air main, telephones, 50 ft (46 metres) of both conductor rails, and rolling stock were damaged, and a retaining wall demolished, but there were no casulaties. Services suspended Camden Town to Edgware, with replacement bus services initiated.[1][2] Service between Edgware and Hampstead resumed at 07:15, with single line working between Hampstead and Camden Town from 08:45.[3]

At 08:00 on the 2nd, the following working conditions were reported:
Northern line
Camden Town and Edgware suspended - bomb damage at Golders Green 02/10.

District line
Ealing Common to Ealing Broadway suspended - damage to Hanger Lane Bridge 28/09.

Metropolitan line
Kings Cross and Moorgate suspended - damage 19/09 and 24/09.
Addison Road to Latimer Road suspended (25/09), expected to re-open 01/10.
Ruislip to Uxbridge suspended - bomb damage 30/09.[4]
